An artist's simple but emotional illustration has struck a chord on social media among those wishing to express their solidarity with the people of France after the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris on Friday night.

Soon after hearing about the wave of violence in Paris, French graphic designer Jean Jullien painted an austere image of the Eiffel Tower wrapped in a peace sign.

Jullien, who currently lives in London, initially posted the artwork to Instagram and Twitter, with the caption "Peace for Paris," where it has garnered more than 158,000 likes and 58,000 retweets respectively.

Pakistani women's rights activist Malala Yousafzai also shared the image on her Instagram.

Jullien said he was inspired to create the now-iconic symbol through the simple association of Paris and Peace.

"It's a communication tool for people to share their solidarity. It's a message for peace," he told The Associated Press.

He added that he has been awed by its widespread on popularity on social media.

"I was overwhelmed that so many people used it," Jullien said.
