MIAMI - The first named tropical storm of the eastern Pacific hurricane season has formed far from Mexico's coast.

Tropical Storm Andres formed Thursday and strengthened through the day to maximum sustained winds near 95 kph. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says the storm could become a hurricane overnight or Friday, though it is not currently forecast to threaten land.

The storm is centred about 1,285 kilometres south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California and is moving west-northwest at 19 kph, which is expected to continue overnight.
