Almost 300 NDP staffers will be out of work after the party lost more than 50 seats in Monday’s federal election and slid back into third place.

The ones who are staying will have until Nov. 2 – just over a week -- to vacate the opposition leader’s office, CTV’s Richard Madan reported Thursday night.

All 300 staffers will get a severance package, and so will the NDP MPs who lost their seats.

But some of those MPs could lose those severance packages because more than five dozen of them have been ordered to repay a total of nearly $3 million to the House of Commons for improperly using their parliamentary office budgets to pay staffers in satellite offices.

Each MP owes an average of $30,000, but some owe triple that amount. The NDP has denied any wrongdoing and is fighting the repayment order in court.
