OTTAWA -- The federal Green party says it's looking into a report that one of its Ontario election hopefuls plans to step down and urge people to vote NDP.

Community newspaper Peterborough This Week says Gary Beamish, the anticipated Green candidate in Peterborough-Kawartha, is planning to drop out of the race after being formally nominated.

The paper says he will advise constituents to vote for the NDP candidate instead of splitting the vote by supporting him.

Beamish reportedly plans to attend all-candidates debates, mainly to try to convince voters that Stephen Harper's Conservatives aren't right for Canada.

Beamish could not immediately be reached.

Green party spokesman Julian Morelli says officials have yet to speak to Beamish, but the party still intends to field candidates in all ridings.
