Two federal byelections will be held on Nov. 17 for the ridings of Whitby-Oshawa in Ontario, and Yellowhead in Alberta.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the byelections in a statement issued Sunday.

The Whitby-Oshawa seat was previously held by former federal finance minister Jim Flaherty, who died last April of a heart attack.

The Yellowhead riding was vacated in September after Conservative MP Rob Merrifield resigned his seat to head up Alberta's trade relations with the U.S. in Washington, D.C.
