The owners of a New Brunswick restaurant say it felt “really good” to track down a customer and reimburse them after realizing that a sizable gratuity had been left in error.

Claudine Cyr, who co-owns Claudine’s Eatery in Fredericton said she was doing some calculations at the register on Monday morning, when she realized the mistake.

“When I checked all the bills in the morning I noticed that my cash was over, so I knew something was not right,” Cyr told CTV Atlantic.

She then found a debit receipt from the previous afternoon, for three orders of the liver and onion dish. The bill came to $55.75, along with a $70 tip.

Gillingham told CTV Atlantic that, as soon as they saw it, they “knew it was a mistake, and we knew we weren’t going to stop until we found the rightful owner of that little-too-large of a tip.”

To find the person, Gillingham posted a photo of the bill, with the banking information redacted, to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

“We believe the customer punched in the wrong amount for the tip and we would like to reimburse them,” Gillingham wrote in the post.

She called what happened next “unbelievable.” Not only was the post shared more than 1,300 times, the person who left the tip was found.

“They came in and we gave them their money back and they were really happy,” Cyr said.

A Facebook user who identified herself as the customer who left the tip in error later commented on the posting, thanking everyone for sharing the post.

“We did tip … it’s just the wrong amount. We just got it all straightened out. Good honest people!”

Gillingham said it “feels really good” to connect the person back with the extra money.
