A couple of new parents in Toronto thanked firefighters Sunday for helping to deliver a baby boy who seemed determined to be born at home.

Mother Rabia Faruq woke up early Saturday morning in labour, two weeks before her due date.

Her husband Shahid Rahman rushed to get ready for a trip to the hospital, but Faruq said she couldn’t move due to the pain.

After calling 911, firefighters rushed to the rescue, delivering a screaming baby boy right there in the apartment. EMS showed up soon after.

Firefighters Slobodan Kucevic and Daniel Andrews visited the couple Sunday to see how everyone was making out.

Rahman thanked them for their help. “They did a great job,” he said.

The family is fine, even though they were caught off guard by the early delivery and don’t yet have a crib, or a name picked out.

“We got him early,” said Rahman. “We will celebrate him early.”
