A woman was strangled to death Thursday when her scarf and hair got caught in the moving escalator at a Montreal metro station.

Police say the 47-year-old woman was found at the bottom of an escalator at the Fabre station at around 9:15 a.m.

The woman has been indentified as Naima Rharouity.

Paramedics tried to revive her, but were unsuccessful.

ā€œI can recall a lot of accidents in the escalators in the metro over my career, but Iā€™ve never seen anything quite like this,ā€ said Robert Lamle of Urgences Sante.

The coroner is now investigating what police say appears to have been a tragic accident.

Police said surveillance video footage will be reviewed in an effort to determine exactly what happened.
