Residents in a Winnipeg neighbourhood are frustrated by stomach-churning dark brown water flowing from their taps.

North Kildonan resident Rob Miller posted a video on Facebook Tuesday that shows what looks like mud or red wine flowing into his bathtub.

Other people in the neighbouhood have had the same problem, including Ruth Harms, who hasn’t been able to shower or do laundry at home.

"You need water for a lot of things in summertime,” she said. “I don't mind it for the plants, it doesn’t matter, but for inside it's very inconvenient,” she added.

The City of Winnipeg said that the water discolouration was caused after a contractor broke a water main. The city apologized and said it is working to fix the problem.

Until the problem is cleared up, the city says people should not drink the water. If residents experience brown water lasting more than three hours, they are advised to call 3-1-1.
