Sophie Gregoire Trudeau is getting praise on Instagram for her surfing skills.

The wife of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and mother of three shared a photo of herself riding a wave near Tofino, B.C., on her Instagram account Thursday.

She added the note: “Friends and neighbours in Tofino -- we keep you in our hearts year-round: thank you for a warm welcome, a peaceful stay and for being a yoga, surf, kid-friendly wildlife haven!”

The photo was liked thousands of times in the first hour after it was posted. People have added comments, including “rock it Sophie” and: “Oh my goodness I'm so impressed! We just tried this two days ago and it was way harder than it looks!”

The couple attracted plenty of attention last summer during their vacation to Tofino, a popular tourist destination with around 1,900 people on the west coast of Vancouver Island. A photograph of Trudeau shirtless on a beach was shared around the world.

The prime minister made headlines on the island again earlier this month, when he took a spill into the water while kayaking in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve near Victoria, B.C., and posed for a photo with a bride and groom on their wedding day.

Trudeau's government has faced criticism from many people on Vancouver Island over his decision to approve Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which would increase oil tanker traffic past its shores. B.C.’s NDP-Green coalition government has vowed to fight the project.
