A Quebec community came together this weekend to support a single mother and her four newborn quadruplet daughters.
The chances of giving birth to quadruplets are extremely slim -- only one in 700,000. But six months ago Melina Forget gave birth to four healthy girls: Kim, Kate, Eva and Emma.
The 22-year-old mother says her daughters are "quiet" and "good." But since the girls' father left the family in the fall, the new mom says she's struggled with feeding, clothing and looking after the quadruplets.
"I'm thinking positively and my girls are so good," Forget told CTV Montreal. "But it's tough sometimes."
Inspired by her niece's hard work, Forget's aunt, Ginette L'Heureux, organized a fundraiser for the family on Saturday.
"I love Melina very much because she's a good mother and she's a good person," L'Heureux said.
The aunt rented out a local community centre in Ile Perrot, Que., and invited supporters to pay a $15 entrance fee to attend the event, which included music, food, balloons and photo opportunities with the girls.
L'Heureux said she hoped the money could go towards buying clothing, diapers, food, and other necessities for the four sisters and their mother.
"(Forget) doesn't have any car to put the four babies in," L'Heureux said, noting that the funds raised were used to buy Forget a minivan.
Forget, who was a student at Universite de Montreal before becoming a full-time mother, said she was grateful for the outpouring of support.
"I'm so happy all the people came to see my girls and help me because it's a lot of work," she said.
She said she plans to return to her studies and finish her degree once her daughters are older.
