The suspect wanted in the shooting of two Mounties in Alberta is dead, according to RCMP Alberta.

Police have "tentatively" identified the suspect, but will not release any further details at this time. However, CTV News has learned the name of the suspect is Shawn Rehn.

RCMP assistant commissioner Marlin Degrand said at a press conference on Saturday that Mounties tracked the suspect to an unoccupied private residence in a rural area east of St. Albert, Alta.

Officers at the scene found the suspect's body when they entered the residence.

"It appears the suspect forced entrance into the residence, but nobody was home," said Degrand.

RCMP have not released any further details about the death, and the investigation is ongoing.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team will also engage in an independent review of the circumstances of the suspect's death, according to an RCMP press release.

Police were hunting for the male suspect after the two officers were significantly injured in an early morning shooting at a casino in St. Albert.

Auxiliary Const. Derek Walter Bond, 49,  and Const. David Matthew Wynn, 42, were both taken to hospital, where Wynn was listed in grave condition.

"At this point in time … his survival is at stake – absolutely," said Degrand said, referring to Const. Wynn.

In a news release Saturday evening, RCMP said Bond had been released from hospital, but that Wynn's condition had not changed.

Wynn joined the RCMP in 2009, and Bond has operated with the force in a volunteer capacity since 2008.

Degrand said the two officers were shot while investigating a stolen vehicle complaint at the Apex Casino in St. Albert at about 3 a.m. The unknown suspect allegedly opened fire when he was approached by police.

Degrand said two shots were fired, and the officers did not have a chance to return fire.

He did not say what kind of weapon was used in the shooting.

According to Degrand, auxiliary constables, such as Const. Bond, do not carry firearms but are equipped with pepper spray and a baton. They are typically employed in community policing initiatives.

The RCMP have seized security video inside the casino, and it is currently being examined.

Degrand says that investigators believe that the suspect was acting alone.

The hunt for the suspect occurred in the area southeast of the Sturgeon Valley Golf Course in St. Albert, where officers were seen hauling away a dark-coloured pickup truck.

Degrand confirmed that the suspect's vehicle was found near the scene in a ditch.

Mounties closed off several roads inside a large wooded area near the course. The roads were reopened after the suspect was located.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Canada's "thoughts and prayers" are with the officers and their families in a tweet sent out on Saturday.

Steve Blaney, the minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, said in a statement that his "thoughts and prayers" are also with Const. Wynn and Const. Bond.

"This incident is a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by members of our law enforcement community who work selflessly each day to keep our country safe," he added.
