A Prince Edward Island man says he was rattled when a “projectile” smashed the outer layer of his window on a recent Air Canada Express flight.

David Smith tweeted a photo of the damaged window on Tuesday and said that his five-year-old daughter was sitting beside him at the time of the incident.

He later told CTV News Channel that whatever struck the window “probably put about an inch to an inch-and-a-half hole in the outer pane of glass.”

The flight attendants were busy preparing for the plane’s descent, so Smith said he didn’t have a chance to tell anyone about the window damage until after landing.

“My fear was that being this close to landing, I didn’t want to alarm everyone else on the plane and begin panic,” he said. “I was probably, honestly, in shock.”

Although Smith initially complained on Twitter that Air Canada had not followed up with him after the incident, he said someone from the airline called him on Tuesday.

“They were quite apologetic and concerned about our well-being,” Smith said, adding that he appreciated the call.

In a statement to CTV News, an Air Canada spokesperson said the flight in question was AC8536, operated by the airline’s Express partner Jazz. The Q400 aircraft was flying from Charlottetown to Montreal last Friday when an apparent piece of ice hit the window, Peter Fitzpatrick said.

He said the safety of the flight was not compromised since the windows are double-reinforced.

Fitzpatrick said a customer reported the incident only after the flight landed, as he was leaving the aircraft. Jazz then investigated the cause of the damage, “and it appears a piece of ice hit the window.”

“As soon as we learned today (the passenger) had concerns, our customer care team reached out to him,” Fitzpatrick said in the statement.

“While the safety of the aircraft was not an issue, we recognize this was an unsettling experience so we responded to provide reassurance as soon as we knew he wished to speak with us.”
