LONG POINT, Ont. -- A man who spent a half hour in the frigid waters of Lake Erie when his canoe capsized in Norfolk County, Ont., has been released from hospital.

Provincial police say the 52-year-old Waterloo resident was about 1.6 kilometres off shore at Long Point on Friday night and heading to some ice in the inner bay when the canoe tipped and he was tossed into the water.

He spent 30 minutes in the water before firemen arrived in a Zodiac to rescue him after his family called 911.

He was then taken to hospital where he was treated for hypothermia and released.

Police say he wasn't dressed appropriately and didn't have safety equipment in his canoe.

They're reminding anyone heading out on the water in chilly conditions to wear a special cold water suit and make sure they have the proper safety equipment.
