A member of the Canadian Armed Forces says he is frustrated and upset after an irreplaceable service medal was stolen from his home during a break-and-enter over the weekend.
Master Cpl. Marc Harrison earned the medal for his eight-month tour of duty in Afghanistan in 2010, where he trained members of the Afghan National Army. He kept it locked inside a safe in his Barrie, Ont., home.
But when Harrison arrived home on Sunday, he says the safe was gone.
"I was upset, frustrated. It's one of the few things that I feel I actually had to really earn," Harrison told CTV Barrie.
An Xbox and other valuables inside the safe will likely be covered by insurance, but Harrison says the medal, consisting of a golden star linked to a green and red band, carries a special meaning.
"It's just money in the end. But this is probably the one thing that becomes a little closer to irreplaceable," he said.
Police have combed the area looking for signs of an intruder. So far, no arrests have been made.
"I'm processing the scene, which includes taking photographs of the scene, dusting for prints and just basically looking for any evidence of a break and enter,” said Detective Const. Shawn Denomme.
Harrison is asking anyone who sees the medal at pawn shops or second-hand stores to report it to police.
