A former member of the Canadian Forces is facing a number of weapons-related charges in connection to an alleged incident earlier in the week involving threats against personnel at CFB Wainwright.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service announced Friday it has charged former Canadian Armed Forces member Dennis Charlong with five weapon-related offences in connection to an incident Wednesday at the base southeast of Edmonton.

According to reports, a military police officer in Kingston, Ont., noticed a threat against the Wainwright base on social media and reported it. Details on the threat haven’t been revealed.

Charlong faces a charge of uttering threats, as well as charges including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, and possession of property obtained by crime.

Canadian Forces Provost Marshal Col. Robert Delaney said in a statement that it was through “strong criminal intelligence” that a “potentially devastating situation” in Wainwright was averted.

"I commend the professionalism and diligence of the Military Police personnel involved in this incident ranging from off-duty personnel in Kingston to the Military Police members in Wainwright and the CFNIS Western Region investigation team,” he said.

“Their dedication to service and prompt response to this threat were instrumental in ensuring public safety and containing a dangerous situation."
