ATTAWAPISKAT, Ont. -- Many of the people being evacuated from the remote Attawapiskat First Nation in northern Ontario are being taken to northern Quebec.

Emergency Management Ontario says Val d'or is taking about 340 people, while 335 are being flown to Rouyn-Noranda.

Another 325 residents have been taken to the northern Ontario communities of Kirkland Lake, Fort Frances and Wawa.

EMO says the evacuations to Quebec are expected to complete the process.

Attawapiskat First Nation leaders have declared an emergency due to the high risk of flooding and asked that about 1,000 vulnerable residents be moved out the community on the west coast of James Bay.

An evacuation involving more than 1,500 residents from the Kashechewan First Nation was completed last week.
