A child has died after being injured by an accidental gunshot in Alberta.

Police say the child was injured by a firearm that was accidentally discharged on Monday in an incident involving another child.

A family member told CTV Edmonton that the boy who died was 10 years old, and that he was in the company of his seven-year-old brother at the time of the incident.

The older brother was rushed to hospital, but died the following day.

The incident happened at an acreage outside Grande Cache, Alta., near the western border of the province.

RCMP Sgt. Josee Valiquette called the incident "very tragic," noting the circumstances were difficult for everyone involved, including family, friends and police officers.

"First and foremost it is the people involved, the families who are touched by this," she said. "Our officers are trained to be able to deal with this sort of situation and then later on can seek assistance."

Valiquette said there was no adult in the room when the incident occurred.

Grande Cache Mayor Herb Castle says the death of the young boy has shaken the tight-knit community.

“I don’t know how the family and the rest of the community will go forward with this, but naturally there will be some huge trauma associated with this,” Castle said.

The RCMP continues to investigate the incident. Police wouldn't say whether charges were planned.

Grande Cache is about 435 kilometres west of Edmonton.
