A Canadian Border Services agent in southern Ontario has been fired and others are under investigation over allegations of “serious misconduct,” CTV News has learned.

Sources say the border agent was fired as a result of an investigation. The CBSA would not comment on the individual case, citing privacy concerns.

The allegations include accepting gifts and other benefits, misuse of government electronic networks, abuse of authority and “engaging in preferential treatment.”

The alleged misconduct took place at the Peace Bridge port of entry in Fort Erie, Ont..

An internal investigation is now underway.

The CBSA said Thursday its employees are held to “a very high standard” and are expected to act professionally and in accordance with CBSA policies.

The agency says it took action immediately upon learning of the allegations of misconduct. In cases such as these, individual agents can face disciplinary measures, up to and including firing, according to a CBSA statement.
