In a hurry this morning?

We've got a cheat sheet to help you catch up on the news before you get to work: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in China for his first official visit to the country; a status report is due out today on sexual misconduct in the Canadian military; Canadian doctors have come up with a new technique to protect thyroids of cancer patients; Canada’s response to the census was the best ever, StatsCan says; and a Saskatchewan couple is being forced to prove their children exist for a second time.

1. First visit: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in China today for his first official visit to the country. Trudeau said last week that he hopes his visit will allow for a chance for the countries to "reset" their relationship.

2. Status report: Canada’s Chief of Defence Staff is releasing its second progress report on addressing sexual misconduct in the Canadian military today. The first report was issued in February and resulted in the military starting eight investigations.

3. Pioneering a new type of cancer protection: Canadian doctors have pioneered a new way of protecting a cancer patient’s thyroid from radiation treatments. In a world first, Alberta doctors transferred thyroids in 10 patients with the thyroid functioning normally.

4. Best ever: Statistics Canada says this year’s census had a response rate of 98.4 per cent, with the long form version’s response rate at 97.8 per cent, which according to officials was the best rate ever recorded.

5. Proof of life: Devin Dubois and his wife received a letter from the Canada Revenue Agency telling them to prove their children exist -- or their child benefits would be cut off. But the CRA already asked them in 2014.
