HONOLULU -- A high school teacher who swam a shark attack victim to shore in Maui says the woman kept repeating she was going to die as she clung to him with one arm.

A 20-year-old German tourist was snorkeling Wednesday afternoon when a shark bit off her right arm.

Fifty-seven-year-old Rick Moore, of Laguna Niguel, California, says he jumped in the water after hearing "blood-curdling" screams and seeing blood in the surf.

He found the woman floating on her back.

He says he prayed aloud, fearing the shark was nearby.

His friend Nick Grisaffi, of Laguna Beach, California, carried the woman out of the water as she went in and out of consciousness.

Grisaffi and Moore say they've visited the woman in the hospital and she's in stable condition.
