Vasilije Zivkovic says he just wants to sit down and cry.

The 61-year-old resident of this western Serbian town was among dozens of people queuing Friday at the town's main square to fill up plastic bottles with drinking water after potentially poisonous algae were discovered in Uzice's water supply system some two weeks ago.

Residents are fuming. Zivkovic says, "This is shameful!"

The existence of red-colored algae in the system has left some 60,000 people without water to drink or for cooking, triggering panic and anger. The water crisis has led to cancellation of surgeries in the local hospital.

Uzice authorities and the Serbian army this week started the construction of a temporary backup system.
