Winnipeg’s 50-foot Christmas tree lights up the holiday season

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Winnipeg City Hall.

On Monday evening, the giant 50-foot Christmas tree at city hall – complete with more than 64,000 LED lights and 9,000 decorations – was officially lit for the season.

“This is a holiday tradition to kind of launch the holiday season, to light the Christmas tree,” Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham told CTV’s Colleen Bready during a live broadcast of the event.

“I want to let everybody know there’s something more to come in the coming weeks. We need you to stay tuned.”

Gillingham said the city is looking for some help from the children of Winnipeg to name some of the city’s snow plows. He said more details about that would be released in the coming weeks.

“It’s great to have you, happy holidays. Merry Christmas to everybody,” Gillingham said.
