A tipi set up outside of a Winnipeg elementary school for learning opportunities during National Indigenous History Month has been stolen. According to Jean-Paul Rochon, principal at Angus McKay School, a tipi was set up on the school grounds for a two-week land-based learning residency. In an emailed statement, Rochon said the tipi was stolen during the early hours of Tuesday morning, prompting a police report to be filed. He said the tipi was also set up to acknowledge National Indigenous History Month, the summer solstice on June 20, and Indigenous People’s Day on June 21. “Further, it was a visual reminder of our commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous communities whose children attend Angus McKay,” said Rochon. In a post to social media, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs said, “The theft of this special tipi has deeply impacted an important learning and reconciliation opportunity for the school and community.” The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs is asking for anyone with information to contact Angus McKay School.
