Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Monday night. Winnipeg police said a man first called around 8:42 p.m., saying his brother locked him out of his house on Avon Gate in the Linden Woods neighbourhood. He noted his brother was displaying “concerning behaviour.” The man called a second time just before 10 p.m. saying he was still locked out and his brother was screaming at him through a window. Officers arrived at the home at 10:23 p.m., and around 10 minutes later, police said the man inside the home came out and was carrying an edged weapon. “A use of force encounter occurred and a police service firearm was discharged, and the man was critically injured,” police said in a news release. The man, 42, was provided medical care and taken to hospital in critical condition. He later died from his injuries. Deputy Chief George Labossiere offered his condolences to the family of the man. He said the two officers that attended the call are now on leave, which is protocol during a critical incident. The incident was reported to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) and the IIU is now investigating.
