The City of Winnipeg is looking into ways to increase pedestrian safety in the city’s southwest. Coun. Evan Duncan (Charleswood-Tuxedo-Westwood) has put forward a motion asking the public service to look at the possibility of a trail-highway underpass between the Harte Trail and the Headingley Grand Trunk Trail. The motion notes there is currently no pedestrian connection between these two trails, adding that the underpass would improve pedestrian safety. It says the west perimeter crossing committee has been in discussions with government about a potential underpass and that the province has asked for renewed talks with stakeholders. With these points in mind, the motion asks the public works committee to direct the public service to investigate trail usage, safety data and the engineering information surrounding the feasibility of the underpass, as well as next steps to position the project for funding opportunities. The motion will be discussed at a meeting of the Assiniboia Community Committee on Nov. 20. The full report is available online.
