Three Winnipeg schools placed under hold and secure: police

Three schools were briefly in a hold and secure due to a nearby police investigation Wednesday.

Three Winnipeg schools were briefly placed under a hold and secure Wednesday afternoon.

Winnipeg police confirmed hold and secures were put in place at Glenlawn Collegiate, Glenwood School and Ecole Varennes around 1 p.m. for an investigation.

According to a letter from the Louis Riel School Division, the hold and secures were in place from 1:15 p.m. to 2:20 p.m.

“Staff observed individuals near the school grounds who appeared to be behaving in a threatening manner. The individuals left the area shortly after being noticed, and staff acted quickly to bring all students inside and secure the building,” a letter from Ecole Varennes principal Michelle Kennedy reads.

The hold and secures were lifted after police patrolled and determined the area was safe. An investigation is ongoing.

A hold and secure sees a school’s exterior doors locked to prevent visitors from coming in, but classes run normally inside.

The letter states that clinical services staff, administrators and student services teachers are available to help students and staff members who need it.
