A Manitoba school band with a significant section of tubas and euphoniums rehearses in November 2025.

A video showing a Manitoba school band rehearsing for their upcoming Christmas concert is going viral online, partially due to the significant brass section.

On Nov. 18, Ecole Dugald School in Dugald posted a video on its Instagram of the Grade 6 band practicing in the band room, performing a snippet of “Jingle Bells.” In the past week, the video has taken off, receiving more than 100,000 likes and two million views.

“Social media is a funny thing,” said school principal Andrew Mead. “It’s just the right person shares it, and someone else shares it again, and all of a sudden, we get sort of this exponential growth of people seeing it and sharing it.

“It’s kind of taken on a life of its own at this point.”

Commenters on the video took note of one particular element of the video — the back row of the band is comprised almost entirely of tubas and euphoniums.

“This classroom single-handedly doubled the amount of tuba players in the world,” one comment reads.

“People are into our tubas and our euphoniums, I guess,” Mead said, noting he found some of the comments about the number of tubas funny.

Mead noted for the band, this year is the first time that they picked up an instrument, and he was impressed by their progress.

“They’ve only been playing their instruments for about two months, and to knock that song off, they sound really good,” he said. “It’s such a fun way to show what our kids do every day and show what our teachers do.”

Mead added the video and the comments also provide levity for everyone as they head into a busy season before winter break.

Ecole Dugald School recently wrapped up three days of winter concerts, including the first for the Grade 6 band.
