Winnipeg police are crediting a woman with saving the lives of a man and his child after she jumped in the Red River to save them from drowning. On Aug. 24, police received reports that a child had fallen into the river adjacent to St. John’s Park. Officers arrived in the area just before 7 p.m. and saw CPR being performed on an unconscious child. The child was taken to hospital in critical condition and later upgraded to stable. Police said the child is expected to make a full recovery. As police investigated the incident, they learned a woman saw the child just after they went in the water, and then the man went in to try to save them. “The witness immediately jumped into action to assist both the child and the parent,” police said in a news release. “Demonstrating remarkable courage and selflessness, and with little regard to her own safety, the witness first pulled the father from the water and then immediately swam out to reach the child.” Police said the woman propped the child on her chest as she swam back to shore and started CPR while still in the water. “She is being credited for saving both the lives of the child and the parent during this incident.” Police are reminding people to be cautious around waterways in the city and ensure appropriate supervision.
