A 24-year-old Selkirk man is facing charges after a significant quantity of heroin and opium were found during a recent traffic stop. On Tuesday, the Nishnawbe Aski Police Service, which covers multiple First Nations communities in northern Ontario, noticed a suspicious vehicle travelling west on the Trans-Canada Highway, according to a media release from the Winnipeg Police Service. Winnipeg police pulled over the vehicle and started a drug investigation after “indicators of interprovincial drug trafficking were present,” the release said. Police allegedly found 535 grams of heroin, with an estimated street value of $50,000, concealed inside the vehicle. They also found 17.5 grams of opium, with an estimated street value of $700. The driver of the vehicle was arrested and is facing two charges of possession of a scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking. He remains in custody and the charges have not been proven in court.
