A Barrie driver has been charged after allegedly failing to stop for a school bus in Meaford, police say. The OPP says on Thursday officers were called to an incident where a vehicle drove past a stopped school bus that had its stop arm out and its overhead lights flashing red turned on. Police say children were getting on the bus at that time. As a result, a 37-year-old from Barrie was charged for failure to stop for a school bus. Under the Highway Traffic Act, vehicles must come to a complete stop when a school bus has its stop sign turned out and its red flashing lights on. Drivers also need to be stopped at least 20 metres from the school bus and stay stopped until the stop sign has been closed and the red flashing lights are turned off. Police are reminding drivers that failure to stop for a school bus can result in $2,000 fines and six demerit points. The OPP says that “a few moments of patience can help ensure children arrive at and return home from school safely.”
