Plans for the future of the Port of Churchill are starting to take shape as a new memorandum of understanding has been signed.

Plans for the future use of the Port of Churchill are starting to take shape.

The Arctic Gateway Group—which owns the port—has signed a memorandum of understanding with Inuit-owned Nunavut Sealink and Supply Inc. (NSSI), a northern cargo shipping company.

This MOU aims to restore the deep-water connection that previously allowed essential supplies to be shipped between Churchill and Nunavut.

“The Port of Churchill is ready to supply businesses, industry, and families in Nunavut with the goods they need, reliably and with improved service,” Chris Avery, president and CEO of the Arctic Gateway Group, said in a news release.

Under this agreement, the two groups will look to strengthen supply chains by rail, port and sealift—a term for a cargo ship carrying vital supplies. The goal of this MOU is to launch a Churchill-origin sealift as early as 2026.

“NSSI believes it is important to pursue options that could enhance northern shipping flexibility and contribute to the Port of Churchill’s revival,” NSSI Board Member David Kakuktinniq said in a release.

“This agreement positions us to collaboratively assess the corridor, explore ways to potentially expand northern shipping options, and consider how Inuit-led resupply approaches can best support the long-term needs of families and businesses in the territory.”

The release said this MOU also recognizes NSSI as the Arctic Gateway Group’s preferred carrier for sealift opportunities originating from Churchill.
