Brandon police say a medical examiner has determined the cause of death of a woman who died nine days after being arrested. In a media release sent Friday, police said Cassity Delvenne’s death is “non-suspicious in nature with no evidence of foul play.” Delvenne was 24 when she was found dead in her Brandon apartment on June 21, nine days after she was arrested by Brandon police officers for impaired driving and resisting arrest. A portion of that interaction was caught on camera and shared widely on social media. The video appears to show two officers holding a woman on the ground and punching her multiple times. The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba didn’t investigate. After Delvenne’s death, her family told CTV News they wanted answers. They lit a sacred fire for her at the Manitoba Legislature in mid-September. Cause of death not being disclosed Brandon Police Service said the examiner’s report showed a “definitive cause of death” for Delvenne. It said the police force was also given both her autopsy and toxicology report. “Out of respect for the family of Cassity Delvenne and in compliance with the privacy provisions of the Personal Health Information Act, police cannot publicly share any of the information contained within these reports,” the release said. “Our thoughts and condolences remain with Cassity’s family, friends, and loved ones.” The service said its investigation is now closed.
