New K-8 school coming to southwest Winnipeg

A new school is coming to a fast-growing neighbourhood in Winnipeg in 2027.

The Manitoba government is continuing its announcement of new schools in the city.

Education and Early Childhood Learning Minister Tracy Schmidt announced Wednesday that the province will be building a kindergarten to Grade 8 school in southwest Winnipeg’s Waverley neighbourhood for the Pembina Trails School Division.

Schmidt said the school is being built because the neighbourhood is growing.

“This new school will help us keep up as the community grows so we can keep class sizes small and make sure kids have a great school to go to in their neighbourhood,” said Schmidt in a news release.

The province said the Pembina Trails School Division has seen student numbers increase by 17 per cent since 2019, and the school is being designed with future expansion in mind.

The announcement comes after a new school was announced for Transcona on Monday. That school is expected to open in 2027.

The school in Waverley will be located on Castlebrook Drive between Landover Drive and Skyline Drive. Construction is expected to start in 2026, and is being targeted to open in 2027.

The school is expected to welcome 600 students, will be a dual-track English and French school, and also have 74 infant and preschool spaces.
