Manitoba’s police watchdog investigating death following home break-in

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating the death of a man who allegedly broke into a Winnipeg home on Wednesday.

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died while in custody of the Winnipeg Police Service.

According to a news release from the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were called to a reported break and enter at a home in the 100 block of Burrin Avenue on Wednesday.

When they arrived, a 34-year-old man was found unconscious inside the home. Police said the man “entered into a residence unlawfully with the homeowners present.”

Winnipeg police did not share details of the suspect’s injuries or why he was unconscious.

Police said officers handcuffed the man for safety reasons in order to provide first aid until the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service arrived. The suspect was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced deceased.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is now investigating the suspect’s death, as it is deemed an in-custody death.
