Days after the transit union said a Winnipeg bus driver was stabbed with a syringe, police confirmed its major crimes unit is now investigating. Police announced Friday investigators are looking into a early-morning assault on a bus driver Wednesday in the area of Isabel Street and William Avenue. Police released few details about the incident, saying officers responded to a stabbing around 1:18 a.m. “Officers learned that the rider became disruptive after being asked to pay the fare,” the police said. “Before the rider exited the bus, the driver was stabbed in the lower body with an unknown object.” This comes after the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1505, which represents Winnipeg Transit employees, had provided more details on Wednesday about the alleged assault. Union president James Van Gerwen previously told reporters the driver was stabbed twice in the leg with a syringe after a woman reached around the safety shield on the bus. Police would not confirm the weapon used was a syringe, telling CTV News at this point it is still part of the investigation. The driver received minor injuries and was taken to hospital in stable condition, according to police.
