The first week of the high school football season is in the books. Action got underway last week with seven games opening the year on Thursday, followed by another eight games on Friday. The offence was clicking for Dakota, West Kildonan, and Elmwood, who each scored more than 30 points to secure wins (Dakota 58 – Murdoch 0, West Kildonan 42 – Tec Voc 6, and Elmwood 35 – Miles Mac 1). Grant Park was able to hold onto a 29-22 win against Crocus, while St. Norbert beat Churchill 16-6 and Windsor Park grabbed the 28-13 victory over Garden City. It was also a defensive duel between Dryden and John Taylor, with Dryden coming out on top 5-2. On Friday, the endzone was a busy spot on the field, with Oak Park winning 69-14 over Steinbach, while St. Paul’s blanked Sturgeon 61-0. Sisler secured a 49-7 win over Maples, Vincent Massey Collegiate shut out Brandon’s Vincent Massey 41-0, Springfield beat Kelvin 36-8, and St. John’s topped Daniel McIntyre 32-6. There were a couple of back-and-forth contests Friday, Beaver Brae beating Fort Frances 34-27 and River East squeezing out the 18-14. Week 2 will get started on Tuesday, as the regular season will kick off for the Junior Varsity teams. More JV football is scheduled for Wednesday, followed by 15 Varsity games spread out between Thursday and Friday.
