Grant’s Old Mill closed to public due to needed repairs

An iconic building in St. James is closed to visitors until repairs can be made.

Grant’s Old Mill on Portage Avenue near Sturgeon Road won’t be welcoming visitors inside until the work is done, a City of Winnipeg spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

“The condition of the building was recently assessed, and there are structural repairs needed before it can be reopened to the public,” the spokesperson said.

“There’s no timeline on repairs available at this time.”

The mill was built in 1975 and is a replica of an 1829 mill built by Cuthbert Grant, one of the earliest Metis leaders in Manitoba. The mill is powered by water and used to grind wheat into flour.

The St. James Assiniboia Pioneer Association operates the mill as a museum.

A 50th anniversary event will take place on July 12.
