CSC reports second death of inmate at Manitoba prison

A second inmate has died at Stony Mountain Institution this week.

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) announced Friday that Shane Kruchak, 50, had died on Thursday.

He had been serving a sentence of two years, six months and 18 days since Dec. 4, 2024.

The CSC said his next of kin have been notified.

It is the second death at Stony Mountain reported this week. The CSC said Michael McKay, 54, died on Tuesday. He was serving a six-year sentence.

The CSC said investigations are underway into both deaths.

“In all cases that an individual dies of non-natural causes while in custody, the police and coroner are called in to investigate,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.

“Causes of death are determined by the Coroner’s Office. They have yet to complete their work on the deaths of Michael McKay and Shane Kruchak.”
