Two dead, including child, following crash on Manitoba highway: RCMP

A 39-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl have died following a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon.

According to RCMP, the crash occurred on St. Labre Road, near the community of St. Labre, at approximately 12:45 p.m.

When RCMP arrived, emergency crews had already arrived and were tending to the scene. A damaged truck was on the southbound lane of the gravel road and a minivan was on its side in a small creek by the road.

RCMP said the initial investigation has found the truck was being driven south on St. Labre Road, when a minivan travelling north veered into the southbound lane after a curve in the road, resulting in a crash that sent the minivan into the creek.

The driver of the van, a 39-year-old woman, and an 11-year-old girl who was a passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene. A 10-year-old girl who was also in the van was taken to hospital with minor physical injuries.

RCMP said the people in the van were part of the same family, but did not specify their relationship.

The driver of the truck, a 72-year-old man, was assessed on scene by paramedics, but did not need further medical attention.

The investigation into the crash continues.

St. Labre is approximately 120 kilometres southeast of Winnipeg.
