Heat records broken across the province

The first day of October brought another bout of record-setting heat across Manitoba.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), 10 communities across the province set new heat records on Wednesday.

Churchill’s was perhaps the most drastic, with a recorded high of 24.2 C, comfortably besting the previous record of 18.6 set in 1977—a huge margin by meteorological standards.

In Berens Rivers’ case, it broke a record that was more than a century old. That community recorded a high of 24.7 C, surpassing the previous record of 22.2 C set in 1912.

Other northern communities that experienced record-breaking heat on Wednesday include Flin Flon, Gillam, Norway House, Thompson, Grand Rapids and The Pas.

Meanwhile, Lynn Lake tied its record set in 2021 of 22.8 C.

Further south, Gimli recorded a high of 25.7 C, which outdid the previous record of 21.2 C set in 2015.

The new records are the latest round in a series of broken heat records, ushered in by a round of unseasonably warm days to end September and kick off October.

However, ECCC forecasts temperatures across the province will return to more typical October values by week’s end.
