Windsor-Essex jolted awake by overnight storm as tornado warning briefly issued

Windsor saw a red tornado warning in the early hours of Wednesday morning. CTV Windsor’s Sanjay Maru tells us what this means for the rest of the season.

Residents across Windsor-Essex reached for their phones overnight Wednesday— capturing flashes of lightning and roaring thunder — as a powerful but short-lived storm moved through the region under a red tornado warning.

Environment Canada issued the warning just before 2:15 a.m. Wednesday, citing a potential for a tornado near the international border, south of Windsor.

While no tornado was confirmed locally, officials say the system still packed a punch. Winds exceeding 110 kilometres per hour were reported in nearby Detroit, highlighting the strength of the storm as it crossed the border.

“We had a line of thunderstorms that could potentially be severe,” said Barbara Lapido, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment Canada.

“There was a potential for a tornado in regions close to the international border.”

The warning was lifted roughly 20 minutes later, and CTV News could not find reports of significant damage in Windsor-Essex over the course of Wednesday.

Still, meteorologists say the storm stood out — not just for its intensity, but for when it hit.

“The storm yesterday was quite interesting, simply because we don’t normally have storms of this strong this early in the season,” said Mark Robinson, a meteorologist and storm hunter with The Weather Network.

“The weather pattern right now feels more like July than it does April.”

Robinson said the system was stronger on the U.S. side, where daytime heat helped fuel the storms, but retained enough energy to remain impactful as it moved into southwestern Ontario.

He added that the overnight timing made the storm more difficult — and potentially more dangerous — to assess.

“One of the problems with thunderstorms at night is it’s really hard to pick out what you’re seeing,” Robinson said.

“It’s more difficult to identify what’s scary and what’s not.”

Environment Canada says the early-season severity is tied in part to unseasonably warm temperatures, which have created conditions more conducive to strong storms than typically seen in April.

That trend could continue in the short term.

Forecasters warned of another round of storms later Wednesday, with the potential for wind gusts around 90 kilometres per hour and small hail, before a cold front moves in over the weekend.

That front is expected to bring cooler temperatures — and with it, a lower risk of severe weather.

Looking longer-term, Robinson says researchers are also watching for broader shifts in storm patterns across North America.

“One of the things that we are finding evidence for is a shift in Tornado Alley … moving north and east,” he said, noting that regions like southern Ontario could see increased storm activity over time.

Still, he cautioned against reading too much into a single event.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean that we’re going to have a more active season throughout the summer,” Robinson said.

“It’s not a slam dunk that we’re going to see massive amounts of thunderstorms.”

Environment Canada is reminding residents that storm conditions can change quickly — especially in a region influenced by the Great Lakes.

“There are a lot of local effects with the lake or the rivers that can change the thunderstorms as they come by,” Lapido said.

Officials are urging people to monitor alerts and stay weather aware as conditions evolve.
