A new farmers’ market opened in Lakeshore on Saturday, with the intent of filling a gap in the community. Organizers estimate a few hundred people visited the inaugural Lakeside Market at the Atlas Tube Recreation Centre on Saturday morning, Sandra Pearce, who co-owns the Lakeside Market with her partner, told CTV News they were pleased with the turnout. “There’s been so many people that have come this morning, and they’re so happy that there’s an option at this end of town,” Pearce said. The market is intended to serve as a home for local growers, artists, and other vendors to sell their products, while preventing residents from having to drive out of town to attend a market. While other communities offer farmers’ markets on varying availability, Pearce said there isn’t one in Lakeshore. “We are both farm kids, and we’re both artists, so it’s very important to us to be able to provide to our community a spot for our farmers and local growers to come and share their produce, as well as our local artists to share their creative ventures with the community,” she said Due to a busy weekend for events and vendors, Pearce said they expected a small opening but are prepared to ramp up in the coming weekends. “We have very few vendors this morning, but we are over double the size by next week, and our goal is to fill this whole courtyard by the we’re by the time we’re in the middle of the summer.” Pearce encouraged local vendors interested in setting up a tent at the Lakeside Market to reach out. The market is committed to operating on every Saturday until Sept. 26.
