The Alberta government says recent investments in education are paying off for Alberta students and teachers. The funding, a record $10.8 billion, is helping to pay for more teachers, in-class supports and even more classroom space, officials said. “Parents and teachers told us more was needed to support our world-class education system, and we listened,” Premier Danielle Smith said in a news release. “I am proud to say that more support is coming this school year — giving students the resources they need to succeed and giving teachers the support they need to do what they do best.” For the 2026-27 school year, 2,127 net new teachers have been hired — 566 through complexity teams, 1,090 through the class size reduction grant and 471 through general hiring for the year. More than 1,000 net new education assistants have been hired, all through the complexity team funding. “Back to school means more support for Alberta students. With record education funding, more teachers, more educational assistants, more in-class supports and more classroom space, we’re ensuring students have the resources they need to succeed,” said Demetrios Nicolaides, Alberta education minister. Officials say 17 school projects have been completed in time for the new year and 156 are at various stages of development and construction.
