Lakeshore council has unanimously approved a plan to investigate noise complaints from residents living near the municipality’s relocated skate park at Optimist Park in Belle River. The decision comes after residents on nearby Optimist Street submitted a petition containing about 22 signatures, saying the skate park’s proximity to homes has led to excessive and persistent noise, disrupted sleep and reduced enjoyment of their properties. Speaking before council Tuesday night, resident Jackie Lessard said homeowners have been dealing with noise from the skate park’s steel ramps, along with after-hours activity, amplified music and late-night gatherings. “This ongoing noise and light disturbance has significantly affected the daily lives of nearby homeowners,” she said. “It’s simply not an inconvenience. It disrupts sleep, concentration, relaxation and overall well-being.” The skate park was previously located on the west end of the park near the OPP station, and was moved to the north end in June 2026. She says the situation is pushing some longtime neighbours to make difficult decisions. “Some residents have begun considering selling their homes after decades in this neighbourhood. We have also been advised by a property appraiser that homes in such close proximity to the excessive noise and persistent noise will experience reduced property values,” Lessard said. She said residents are seeking practical steps to address the situation. “Implement meaningful noise mitigation measures, including landscaping buffers, a solid sound barrier on the north side of the structure, and exploring options to insulate the ramps,” said Lessard. In response, Ward 3 coun. Kelsey Santarossa introduced a motion directing administration to hire a third party to assess noise from the relocated skate park. Staff said the municipality first needs to determine noise levels before considering solutions. Officials said all options remain on the table, including barriers, landscaping, modifications to the ramps or even relocating the facility. Council also discussed concerns about after-hours activity and enforcement of park rules. As part of the motion, staff will ensure park signage clearly outlines operating hours and enforcement contact information.
