Habitat restoration begins at Ojibway Prairie Complex

Crews are cleaning up invasive species at Ojibway Prairie Complex to preserve the existing ecosystem.

Habitat restoration has begun at Ojibway Prairie Complex in Windsor.

Crews are working to remove invasive shrubs, like multiflora rose and glossy buckthorn, in 106 acres of land. The land was recently transferred to the Essex Region Conservation Authority.

The work is an effort to protect rare tallgrass prairie and oak savanna, one of Canada’s most endangered ecosystems.

Officials said invasive species threaten provincially rare plants and animals, including Butler’s Gartersnake and the Eastern Foxsnake.

Restoration is expected to finish in 12 weeks.
