Enbridge reviewing future of Chatham office, mayor vows to fight to keep company in community

Enbridge is considering closing its Chatham office, but says there will be no job cuts

Enbridge Gas is reviewing the future of its office in Chatham, but the company says no final decisions have been made and local service will not be affected.

In a statement to CTV News, Enbridge said it regularly reviews its facilities and real estate strategy and is “exploring options to better support our team and evolving operational needs.”

“No final decisions have been made, and no changes are expected in the near term,” the company said.

Enbridge said the process will not impact jobs, customers, or ongoing projects in the region.

“There will be no reduction in job numbers as a result of this potential move,” the company added. “Natural gas service in Chatham-Kent will continue uninterrupted, and any potential changes to office locations will not affect current or future projects in the region.”

The energy company, which employs about 1,000 people across Southwestern Ontario, said it remains committed to maintaining a strong presence in the area and has started “early conversations with local stakeholders.”

“Enbridge Gas is proud of its long-standing presence in Chatham and throughout Southwestern Ontario,” the statement continued. “We remain committed to serving our customers and supporting the communities where we live and work.”

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff said he’s been in contact with Enbridge leadership and is determined to keep the company rooted in the community.

“Enbridge has been part of our community for over a century, contributing not only through employment and investment, but also through meaningful support of local initiatives and organizations,” Canniff said in a statement posted to social media.

“I have reached out directly to senior leadership at Enbridge and will be working with them to better understand the reasons behind this consideration and to explore every possible avenue to keep them here.”

Canniff said the municipality values Enbridge’s role in Chatham-Kent’s growth and will advocate for its continued presence.

“Nothing has been finalized yet, and both council and I will fight to keep their legacy alive in our community for years to come,” he said.
