As trivial as fashion can sometimes be, the woman who started Whatkatewore.com says chronicling what the Duchess of Cambridge wears to events and soirees is anything but.

From Kate's favourite clothing and accessory brands, to outfit choices for more "rugged" events such as a tree-planting ceremony that took place on July 2 in Ottawa, Susan Kelly has come to know the in-and-outs of the Duchess's style.

"People are drawn to (Kate) because she mixes high-end with low-end. She's middle of the road," Kelly told CTV News Channel on Sunday.

Kelly, a former journalist, said Kate's style during the cross-country Canadian tour, which ended on Friday, was chic and graceful.

"She demonstrates that less is more in terms of understated elegance", the fashion royal watcher said. "She's representing the monarchy."

Kate is a trendsetter and what she wears represents a "critical point in (culture) and the way she is copied and imitated also mirrors societal attitudes and standards," Kelly wrote on her blog.

Kate's modest but eye-catching sense of style continued to impress fashionistas on Saturday evening at the restored 1920s-era Belasco Theatre where the royal couple walked the red carpet at a British Academy of Film and Television Arts party.

Just as she did throughout the royal couple's nine-day tour, Kelly shared with her website readers what Kate wore: an Alexander McQueen floor-length lilac gown cinched at the waist with a white waistband also by the British designer; and a pair of Jimmy Choo Vamp Glitter sandals in champagne. Kate accessorized the dress with a pair of "shimmering chandelier-style diamond earrings" on loan to her by the Queen.

The look was "quintessential Kate, understated, elegant and timeless," Kelly wrote on website Sunday.

Kate's outfit on Sunday was "nothing outrageous, nothing over the top," Kelly told CTV News Channel, but she still managed to outshine actresses such as Jennifer Lopez and Nicole Kidman who were also in attendance.

Kelly added, however that Kate "did step it up a little bit" with her five-and-half inch heels which added some "vavoom" to the overall look.

"You have this immense group of super celebrities and than you have Kate … and I think it was fascinating to see the way celebrities in Hollywood were just wowed by Kate and William," Kelly said.

Kelly also provides her readers and wannabe-Duchesses details on how much Kate's frocks and accessories cost, and where they can be purchased.

Kelly also uses some of her old journalism skills to provide her readers with "breaking" fashion news.

On Saturday, when Kate wore a hand-painted Jenny Packham silk dress paired with high-heeled sandals, Kelly wrote "it is the first time we have seen Kate in an open-toe shoe, it also looks like she opted for bare legs, the first time we have seen this during the tour."

The sandals in question, taupe LK Bennett "Silver" sandals are sold out, according to Kelly, but remain available in black suede and patent through the shoe company's website.
