W5’s “Crisis in Care” revealed a startling picture of violence in seniors' care homes across Canada: an estimated 10,000 resident-on-resident attacks each year.
A month later, news of another tragic case, this time, at The Wexford long-term care facility in Toronto’s east end: two women, Joycelyn Dickson, 72 and Lourdes Missier, 91, were brutally attacked late on March 14, 2013.
Missier was hospitalized while Dickson was pronounced dead at the home.
Their fellow resident, Peter Roy Brooks, 72, was charged with second degree murder and aggravated assault.
The attacks at Wexford represent the worst possible outcome of nursing home violence that front-line long-term care workers say is on the rise.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees is calling for a coroner’s inquest into the beating death at The Wexford.
