Suspect identified, arrested in alleged arson at Victoria playground

Police in Victoria have identified and arrested a suspect in an alleged arson they say destroyed a playground structure in the city last month.

An update in the case was provided Wednesday but the suspect has not been charged and therefore is not being publicly identified.

“Further details are limited to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” the Victoria Police Department said in a statement Wednesday, adding that the suspect has been released from custody with conditions.

Firefighters were called to put out the blaze at the playground on the 1500 block of Pandora Avenue around 1:15 a.m. on March 31. A photo provided by VicPD shows a melted purple plastic slide and burn marks on the rubber surfacing.

Police thanked members of the public who have already come forward with information and video and urged anyone who has yet to speak with investigators to call 250-995-7654 and refence file number 26-12901.
